June sees the tenth incarnation of Fresh Air, the much loved contemporary sculpture show set in the magical riverside gardens of Quenington Old Rectory, the home of David and Lucy Abel Smith.
On daily from 19 June to 10 July, the show is an important biennial event on the cultural calendar. This year's exhibition showcases the work of emerging artists as well as more established sculptors. Over ninety artists are represented, terrific value for an admission price of only £2.50 (under 18s get in free).
A special treat this year will be a private evening on Wednesday 6 July, when David and Lucy, who co-curates Fresh Air 2011 with Ana Bianchi, invite you to join them in the marquee for a relaxed evening of music, drinks and canapes. They will be talking about their fascinating work with sculpture and there will be a guided tour of the exhibition afterwards.
The evening is a fundraising event for New Brewery Arts, Cirencester's much-loved arts and crafts centre, and can be booked online through their website at www.newbreweryarts.org.uk
As a charity, New Brewery Arts aims to bring arts opportunities to all sections of the community. At Fresh Air they are working extensively with local schools and colleges, coordinating visits to the show and running sculpture workshops. The programme enables over 750 primary, secondary and special school pupils to benefit from experiencing this fantastic sculpture show first hand.
An exhibition of the work created by the young people at Fresh Air will be held in the community exhibition space at New Brewery Arts from 23 July and throughout the summer holidays.
During Fresh Air, and designed to complement it, New Brewery Arts will be hosting their own selling show entitled Step Into The Garden. Based in the Pool House at The Old Rectory, the show features work by makers who are inspired by birds, plants, gardens, gardening or who simply delight in producing sculptural or functional pieces for indoors and out. You are invited to step into the garden and discover work by Claire Brewster, Abigail Brown, Jenny Southam, Kitty & Dude, Cathy Miles, Chris Eckersley, Loco Glass, Holly Belsher, Robert Race, Celia Smith, Sophie Cook, Katy Goldswain and many more. Admission is via entrance to Fresh Air.
Step Into The Garden links with the Close to Nature exhibition showing at the same time in the main gallery at New Brewery Arts in Cirencester. Why not visit both venues and be inspired by artists’ and makers’ responses to the natural environment?
